在此先作聲明:其實這個題目,自己也從未親身經歷,倒是曾聽過一位輪機長和一位大管(當時是大管),對其經歷的情況描述。

好像沒人對這題目有興趣?...

主機是B&W
Subject: Growth of cylinder liner crack on main engine
Description:
After completion of guarantee dock in XXX, while the vessel made a voyage to LA, suddenly heard the low water alarm bell of jacket cooling water ringing, immediately decreased her revolution and when inspected over the cooling water system in details, found the delivery side of cooling water temperature having increased up to 80oC, therefore stopped main engine in a short time, when removed exhaust valve of No.4 cylinder and inspected inner side of the cylinder, found a considerable amount of cooling water leaking into the cylinder.
At that time, sea condition was very bad, therefore tentatively removed the crank bearing and fixed the cross head device to tie up and then proceeded to LA with No.4 cylinder none active.

Treatment and cause against the damage:
Following items can be considered as the origin of the trouble but as a result of material test, found the trouble being caused by material defect (gas pocket) of the cylinder liner.
a)Unequal tightening stress on the bolts for cylinder cover after finishing piston works.
b)Abnormal condition of cooling water on cylinder liner ( an extraordinary increase of liner temperature due to air in cooling water).
c)Abnormal decrease of feeding amount on cylinder oil.
d)Material defect.
