Containers Shipping escapes tsunami toll Casualty Ports and lines report only minor damage amid Asian quake devastation and huge death count, write Marcus Hand in Singapore and Janet Porter- Wednesday December 29 2004 SHIPPING escaped largely unscathed from the tsunami catastrophe that killed as many 45,000 people across Asia on Boxing Day. While huge areas of coastline throughout the region were devastated, vessels out at sea remained safe from the 10 m waves caused by the massive earthquake off northern Sumatra. Shipping lines, agents, brokers, and port authorities contacted by Lloyd』s List all reported only minor accidents and relatively little damage amid the destruction and carnage elsewhere. 「If you were out at sea way below the lowest spring tide level the ship rode the sea quite easily,」 said Bill Smart, director of Bengal Tiger Line, which specialises in feedering across the Bay of Bengal to Southeast Asia. The company suffered no damage to its vessels and all crew were safe. Other lines with ships in the region, such as Maersk Sealand, Hapag-Lloyd, NYK, APL, P&O Nedlloyd, Zim and Regional Container Lines, reported a similar picture, with virtually no damage to ships or cargo and very few crew injuries. 「All our ships are in good order and port facilities are working normally,」 a spokesman for NYK in Tokyo said. Maersk Sealand issued a statement saying it had not received reports of any employee casualties or damage to operated facilities. However, P&O Nedlloyd confirmed yesterday that two of its staff had been killed while holidaying in Sri Lanka (see page 2), while other lines said they were still trying to contact employees who were on vacation. The effect of the tsunami was felt as far away as Salalah in Oman where the 4,437 teu Maersk Mandraki, on charter to Maersk Sealand, was temporarily grounded although not damaged. Even Nairobi experienced abnormal tides, although the reef protected the port from harm. Precious Shipping managing director Khalid Hashim said the 30 ft-high waves were not unusual at sea and that most ships would be able to easily ride out such a phenomenon 「with little or no damage at all to show for the experience」. Some ships that were berthed when the tsunami struck were not so lucky, as ports bore the full force when the killer waves broke. At the port of Kreung on the Indian Ocean facing the coast of Aceh, Indonesia, two crew members were killed and three are missing from the 1,862 dwt product tanker Tirta Karsa. The vessel was chartered by Pertamina from PT Pelayaran Taruna Cipta Kencana. In Sri Lanka the general cargoship, Jaami,owned by Midland Shipping Lines of Bangladesh and chartered by Singapore』s Sea Consortium was forced repeatedly into the breakwater at Colombo, holing the vessel. The crew abandoned ship and the vessel later grounded and was still stuck in the harbour yesterday. Colombo port was closed after the disaster but reopened yesterday although work was reported to be slow and workers said to be terrified that aftershocks from the earthquake could bring more tsunamis. P&O Nedlloyd and Zim were among a number of lines that bypassed the port after the earthquake. Furthermore, dockworkers in places such as Colombo and Chennai are having difficulty even reaching the ports, with inland infrastructure having been wrecked. For shipowners and operators, the biggest problem they now face is delays, but several global carriers were saying yesterday it was virtually business as usual since the big deepsea terminals such as Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas were not hit. Star Cruises diverted the weekly three-night voyages for the SuperStar Virgo and SuperStar Gemini that were scheduled to call at the Thai resort island of Phuket to Langkawi, Malaysia until further notice, after the Thai island suffered massive damage leaving over 1,000 dead.
